+

How Does Your Data Compare to Official Statistics Canada Data on Foreign Direct Investment or Other National Statistics Data Sets?

Official investment data provided by Statistics Canada or other national statistics rely on balance of payments (BOP) principles and are not directly comparable to the bottom-up data-collection method used by the APF Canada Investment Monitor (please see methodology page here.)
However, the advantages of using a bottom-up approach are: 1) the ability to gain a better understanding of the ultimate investor and beneficiary behind investments; 2) being able to provide more information on investments that would be unavailable or protected in official statistics; and 3) being able to provide a more detailed breakdown of investments sub-nationally or by industry.

+

Does the APF Canada Investment Monitor Adjust Data Based on Disinvestment?

No, we do not adjust our data for disinvestment. Please see our methodology page for more on data collection.

+

What Third-Party Data Does the APF Canada Investment Monitor Use?

The Investment Monitor uses a limited amount of data from fDi Markets, making up less than 10 percent of the content on the website. To purchase data from fDi Markets, please see here.

The Visualization for the Polar Graphs Used for the Industry Breakdowns Does Not Seem to be Correct?

Due to the difference in scale for certain investments (billions to thousands of dollars), a logarithmic scale was used for the polar graphs. If a linear scale were used, certain industry investments would be no longer visible.

+

I Notice There are Differences in Some of the Aggregated Totals Provided by the Visualizer Versus When I Add Them Up Manually?

Due to the difference in scale for certain investments (billions to thousands of dollars), differences will appear in aggregated values because of rounding errors.
